Politics first

JUDGING from the reluctance of President Aquino to appoint a permanent Chief PNP apparently in an effort to still please and protect the interests of his bosom friend, the disgraced Alan Purisima, this administration is not the least concerned about how provinces are coping with their peace and order problems, foremost of which is the continued proliferation of illegal drugs.

So it has been explained that an OIC police director-general (Chief PNP), cannot approve permanent appointments, ergo, until Mr. Aquino decides to name Mr. Purisima’s permanent replacement, Pangasinan like other provinces, will have to continue to suffer from its OIC-rotation policy that it instituted since 2013 for political reasons.

Pangasinan thought that when Interior and Local Government Sec. Mar Roxas visited the province last week, he would give an assurance that a permanent police director in Pangasinan would be appointed soon as a permanent Chief PNP is in place. Alas, it was not to be. Mr. Roxas did not even attempt to issue the littlest assurance that help is on the way to stomp out illegal drugs that break up hundreds of families every day. He was more interested in covering up for the shortcomings of his boss, Mr. Aquino. Sadly, Politics remains a priority in this “Tuwid na Daan” government.

If this is how an expected Roxas presidency will preside over the affairs of the country, then we are in trouble. Between the two contenders, Vice President Binay who is being exposed for corruption, and Mr. Roxas, a politician first -public servant second, salvation for Pangasinan and the country may not be forthcoming for another 9 years.

Men of substance

ANTONIO Trillanes IV and Alan Peter Cayetano are definitely today’s men of substance from the Senate.  For staying the course and defying libel threats from the embattled Binays of Makati, Trillanes is proving himself worthy of his growing stature as a lawmaker bent on pursuing both the perceived crooks in government and the so-called “hoodlums in robes” up to the ends of the earth.  How many of them in the Senate are like him?

And now this, Cayetano’s “Anti-Hassle Bill.”  This is a profoundly people-friendly law, and very timely even, as it would allow us soon the luxury of filing our income taxes and our car registration renewals, among other government service-oriented functions, well, totally hassle-free. We can’t wait to have it passed swiftly.  For this, Cayetano, himself a tested fiscalizer and a ferocious fighter for what is right no matter who gets hurt, deserves applause. Like Trillanes.

May their tribe increase.
