DOE: Host towns of power plants can be helped

UNINTERRUPTED POWER SERVICE

LINGAYEN—The towns of Sual and San Manuel can be assured of uninterrupted power service through the expected power crisis provided their power distributors have been buying power from Team Energy and San Roque Multi-Purpose Dam respectively.

This was pointed out by Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla after Sual Mayor Roberto Arcinue sought his intercession asking Team Energy to allocate one megawatt daily to serve the town’s requirement.

Mr. Petilla said if Pangasinan Electric Cooperative (PANELCO) has an existing commercial agreement with Team Energy, the request can be granted.

The same is true in the case of the town of San Manuel which hosts the San Roque Multi-purpose Dam Project (SRMDP). “If the Pangasinan Electric Cooperative is also buying power or has commercial agreement with the San Roque Power Corporation (SRPC), then there is no problem,” Mr. Petilla said.

In a talk to newsmen after he graced the information caravan of the National Power Corporation (NPC), Mr. Petilla said the host towns have every right to demand from IPPs for uninterrupted supply of power provided their electric cooperatives have existing commercial agreements with IPPs in their localities.

Meanwhile, Sec. Petilla allayed fears that major brownouts will occur during the summer period, from March to July this year.

He said he does not see any major incidents of brownout this summer because there are enough power reserves, aside from the fact that a reduction in the demand for electricity has been noted.

But he cautioned the public and the power sector that the worst has yet to happen since May is the hottest month of the year. (Leonardo Micua)
