Colegio de Dagupan to the rescue

SOME 73 jeepney drivers and operators in Dagupan City are assured of being covered by Social Security System (SSS) benefits under the law after Colegio de Dagupan (CdD) guaranteed to provide P200 subsidy to cover part of their Social Security System (SSS) contributions.

It was made possible through a memorandum of agreement among SSS-Dagupan Branch, Downtown Loop Utility Express (DOLUJEX), Bonuan Binloc Operators / Drivers Association (BINODA) and CdD.

Under the agreement, signed last March 9, 2015, the CdD will cover P200 of the member’s contribution, while the remaining P130 will be shouldered by the members of DOLUJEX and BINODA.

“We decided to help the operators and drivers by paying a portion of their SSS contributions because we know how important contributions are in order to avail of SSS benefits,” CdD President Dr Voltaire P Arzadon said. “It’s also our way of thanking the DOLUJEX and BINODA for serving the transportation needs of both our students and faculty,” he added.

Both associations initially enrolled as members of SSS’ Alkanssya program in March 2014 through the prodding of CdD President Dr Voltaire P Arzadon and the officers of the student council. However, when Arzadon learned that the members of the associations were having a hard time paying their SSS contributions in full regularly, CdD decided to assist by subsidizing a portion of the monthly contribution.

Dagupan branch head Caesar P Saludo lauded the CdD management’s support saying “the commitment of Colegio de Dagupan to subsidize part of the SSS contributions of our operators and drivers as a noble act since it ensure that the operators and drivers will be able to cope with their monthly SSS contributions through the Alkansya program and be assured of benefits from the SSS.”

As members of the SSS, DOJULEX and BINODA members can avail themselves of sickness, disability and retirement benefits while, their survivors can receive funeral and death benefits. They can also qualify for salary loans.
