Bolinao’s Santiago Island, soon a town

BOLINAO—Pangasinan will soon have another town to its name before May 2016.

Efforts are being made to convert the Santiago Island into a municipality since the basic infrastructures, from road networks to presence of public establishments as health center, church, market, among others are now in place.

First District Rep. Jesus Celeste said the documentary requirements needed to formalize the proposal are already being prepared.

According to Mr. Celeste, even the required minimum population has been reached.

According to the solon, the conversion of Santiago Island to Santiago Island Town will bring in progress as in employment and tourism.

“Sa tingin ko mas aangat pa ang Bolinao, especially tourism,” he remarked.
Santiago Island, with its center located in Brgy. Goyoden, about 450 meters away from the town proper of Bolinao, was once the center of Bolinao town.

According to Wikipedia, the Island “is an island located off the northeast coast of Bolinao… composed of six barangays namely Binabalian, Goyoden, Lucero, Pilar, Salud, and Victory.”

Its people are mainly into aquaculture industry, producing their known own version of ‘danggit,’ among others.

Second District Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil will reportedly also sponsor the proposal. (Johanne Macob)
