PERYAHAN INSIDE CAMPUS

BAYAMBANG — Concerned parents of students in Bayambang Central School are set to file a case in the Ombudsman against the mayor here and a barangay captain over the operation of peryahan (amusement and gaming center) inside the old school’s compound and for demolishing a span of the school fence.

Filipinas Alcantara, president of Parents Teachers Association (PTA) told local newsmen Tuesday they are poised to sue Mayor Ricardo Camacho and  Barangay Captain Avelino Junio of Barangay Magsaysay for granting business permit to businesswoman Marieta Lo to set up trade fair exhibits and amusement activities at the western portion of the school compound by demolishing a wall of the school compound.

The parents tried to stop the operator from demolishing the fence in order to enable trucks to deliver equipment for the peryahan last Monday.

“Is the peryahan more important than studies of the pupils?,” Alcantara asked.

Alcantara said the school premises should not be used for such purpose and the operator of the games has no right to destroy the fence, especially because the occupancy of the old school is the subject of a pending court case.

The pending case is about the alleged illegal transfer of classes and pupils to a new site in Magsaysay Street that is privately-owned. She lodged her complaint at the police station.

Alcantara accused Junio of berating her in front of many people when she protested the demolition of the fence. Her group has been guarding the school and helping in its renovation since last year in anticipation of the eventual return of the pupils to the old school site.

The PUNCH obtained a copy of the resolution passed by the municipal council passed on Feb. 23, 2015 authorizing the mayor to grant permits to Lo for the baratillo and peryahan whose operations extended to the western portion of the school, for the 401st Foundation Day and fiesta celebration of the town from March 2 to April 30.

Lo’s permits were issued by Camacho on March 2.— (Tita Roces)
