ANONYMOUS TEXT MESSAGES

MAY drug pusher dito sa barangay namin dito sa ____.” “Si_____ is selling shabu to students dito sa ____.”

These are the kind of text messages being sent to the Dagupan City Police Station and which the latter eagerly await 24/7 through the hotline established by the City Anti-Drug Abuse Coordinating Council (CADACC) chaired by Mayor Belen Fernandez.

Because of the citizentry’s involvement in the campaign, the city police are confident that the war against illegal drugs is being won and credit is being given to the use of the hotline for reporting activities of drug peddlers in their barangays and schools.

P/Supt. Christopher Abrahano, chief of police of Dagupan, revealed this when he reported the latest update on the anti-illegal drug campaign to Mayor Fernandez during the weekly executive meeting last week.

The police chief said the anonymous text messages have contributed greatly to the success of the continuing campaign and that’s because the ‘texters’ are assured that their cell phone numbers are kept confidential.

The hotline has become a powerful and effective weapon because almost everybody in the barangays today use cell phones in their daily communications for every reason.

Abrahano said since CADACC opened the hotline text numbers, last year, the number of drug pushers and users arrested by the police in the city have been increasing.

He reported that from January this year to date, the police conducted 27 anti-drug operations that resulted in the arrest and subsequent filing of charges against 33 persons.

Last year, said Abrahano, the police in Dagupan arrested 36 drug personalities and seized 156.2 grams of illegal drugs all because of the CADACC text hotlines.

He confirmed that majority of these anti-drug operations were initiated by the police with the help of informers using the CADACC text lines.

The city government has since established two more hotline: one for anti-bullying and the other for anti-violence against women and children hotline.

Mayor Fernandez lauded the Dagupan police for its unrelenting efforts against illegal drugs to keep the city peaceful and safe.

Fernandez is three-time national awardee of the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), twice as city mayor, and once as city vice mayor, for her unrelenting campaign against illegal drugs in Dagupan.

Abrahano, CADACC vice chairman, was also a DDB awardee in 2013. (Leonardo Micua)
