Farmers’ woes

THE province’s onion and rice farmers have become a distressed sector overnight, what with the dumping of farmgate prices of their produce.

And if buying prices, particularly of onions, which were already way below production costs, were not bad enough, the onions are now being left to rot because the middlemen and traders have been lured to buy smuggled onions.

This development may not cause a public uproar like the Mamasapano massacre of SAF commandos and yet the cause and effect of this disastrous trend on the plight of the farmers impacts directly not only on the desperate attempt of the farmers to survive, on whom family households depend on food on their table.

It behooves upon the provincial government and local NGOs to compel the Department of Agriculture, Department of Finance and other related agencies to act swifty to protect the interests of the farmers.

Unless the situation is corrected immediately, the implementation of the ASEAN economic integration program will further push our farmers down the depths of poverty.

Apologize

MISTER President, do not resign but please, apologize?  That is the call of the moment.

If you resign, it will just exacerbate matters.  Chaos might ensue.  Trouble-makers could unleash unimaginable damage to democracy.  Anarchy not far-fetched.

This is the so-called “last two minutes” of your term.   Endure the pain.  Absorb punishment, if you will, in the form of harsh criticism.  Brickbats.  But while at it, please do it—apologize?  Admit it was you who bungled the Mamasapano Operation.

As President, as leader, as Father of the nation, the buck stops at your desk.  Dump your ego.  Better yet, discard the “e” in ego—leaving only “go.”  Go ahead.  Make our day.  Apologize.  If you will, a grateful nation will salute you.  If you will, you stand 10 feet tall.  Tallest of the tallest.  Go ahead.  Make us proud of you.  Again.

Apologize.
