Dagupan launches grassroots sports program

THE Dagupan City Sports Commission (DCSC) is set to organize its grassroots sports development program, that will train and enhance potential young athletes in the barangays.

Mayor Belen T. Fernandez said the city will train athletes who have “the most passionate devotion” to excel in sports competitions.

DCSC will begin to coordinate with barangay leaders to look into activities of their respective youth sectors while conducting surveys in schools to identify and assess skills of students in a variety of sports.

Meanwhile, the city government is set to allocate more funds for the construction of more covered courts, training for trainers and athletes, purchase of equipment, and rehabilitation of sports facilities.

CEBU TEMPLATE

The DCSC, led by Mayor Fernandez, recently had a consultative meeting at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in Manila last March 17 with the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) and PSC coaches who shared their programs, projects, and best practices with Dagupan City.

With Fernandez during the consultation DCSC officials Finnela Sim, Lemuel Astadan, Eunice Galindez, and Renato Vidal.

PSC Chairman Ricardo Garcia assured the city government of PSC’s full support for the city’s sports development program.

“It is wonderful to see that Dagupan and Mayor Belen have shown great interest in the sports development of young athletes,” said Garcia.

Garcia recommended the adoption of the CCSC grassroots sports development program as template.

The ELH-Grassroots Sports Development Program of the CCSC involves a strong partnership between the LGU, the Department of Education, the barangay council and the private sector.

The CCSC also organizes its annual Summer Grassroots Program for dancesports, basketball, table tennis, karatedo, archery, chess, swimming, track and field, among others.

Fernandez said she will adopt Cebu’s grassroots program to fast-track sports development and in the bid to keep students away from drugs by providing sports activities as an alternative. (CIO)
