WHILE the jeepney and bus transport groups in Metro Manila have been ordered to reduce their fares by P1, the Alliance of United Transport Organizations Province-Wide, Association of Concerned Transport Organizations (AUTOPRO-ACTO) Pangasinan chapter , however, agreed to a fare reduction by P.50 only.

Benny Aquino, chapter president of the AUTOPRO-ACTO, said his group and other transport groups in region one, however, doubt if the roll back in diesel pump price will continue to justify the approved fare reduction.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, however, still has to act on the group’s proposal.

“If government can assure that the downtrend oil price will continue then we have no reason to oppose the fare reduction”, said Aquino.

Aquino and his group attended the public hearing on the proposed fare reduction conducted by LTFRB regional office last January 16.

The group asked the LTFRB to consider P.50 as the maximum amount to be deducted from the present P8.50 minimum fare.

“We can only give passengers P.50 reduction since prices of basic commodities, tires and other necessity for maintenance of our jeeps remain high”, said Aquino.

Although some provinces are already implementing fare decrease, the transport groups in the province are still waiting for an order from LTFRB region one to implement the same.

If LTFRB approves the recommendation, the minimum regular fare in the region will be P8 while the 20% discount of senior citizens, PWDs and students will be pegged at P6.40.

Nonetheless, Aquino said his chapter will abide by the final decision of LTFRB. (Hilda Austria/PNA)
