SAN FABIAN— A tourist from Gerona, Tarlac became the third victim of drowning incident this year at a beach in Barangay Nibaliw Narvarte here last Sunday, February 8.

Maj. Cris Sadino, chief of San Fabian police station (SFPS) identified the victim as Michael Magallanes, 20 years old, visiting the beach in barangay Nibaliw Narvarte with family members and friends.

The victim’s body was retrieved the following day, 9 a.m. Monday.

Sadino said, three persons died in the same beach area during the Christmas holidays last year and two visitors again drowned in January this year.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) head of Pangasinan advised the local government unit of San Fabian town to strengthen its beach guard patrol system to prevent further drowning incidents in the town’s popular beach.

Retired police colonel Fernando de Guzman, PDRRMC head, said Gov. Amado Espino Jr. lent one rescue boat owned by the provincial government to help in rescue efforts.

It also installed a watchtower for lifeguards to use.

The police chief directed barangay officials to help enforce the warning notices posted along the beach area to avoid accidents.

The police cannot confirmed if the victim had alcohol intake since his family declined an autopsy on the body.

At least four members of Water Search and Rescue (WASAR) team and four members of coast guard are deployed to take charge of the area.

“We have also assigned policemen in the area but still their number is not enough to secure all the beachgoers”, said Sadino. (Tita Roces/Hilda Austria)
