PUI, LNU-FQD in titular showdown
SEAOIL-NBTC ELITE LEAGUE
PANGASINAN Universal Institute (PUI) and Lyceum-Northwestern University FQD Special Science High School (LNU-FQD) disputed the coveted championship crown of the 2014-2015 Seaoil-NBTC (National Basketball Training Center) Elite League in one knock-out game held last Friday, February 6, at the DWAD Gym.
The two teams gained entry into the titular showdown after vanquishing their respective rivals in contrasting fashion in their crossover semi-final games last Sunday, February 1.
In the first game, LNU-FQD edged Divine Word Academy of Dagupan (DWAD), the league’s defending champion, with a come-from-behind victory, 88-85; while PUI easily pulverized Federico N. Ceralde Integrated School (FNCIS), 89-79.
LNU-FQD, mentored by coach Christopher Alcantara, blanked DWAD with a 12-0 blast in the last two minutes of the game as the defending champion was leading, 85-78, but remained scoreless until the buzzer that ended the match and enabled the former to grab a championship berth.
The Tapuac District-stationed team scored a point from the line to equalize the score at the end of the third period, 61-61; but DWAD regained the lead, 64-61, as the fourth period started, but was outscored by LNU-FQD and evened the score, 85-85, with 40 seconds left in the game.
PUI, under coach John Ang, on the other hand, was merciless in its conquest of FNCIS as it led as many as 20 points, 63-43, with 1;34 minutes remaining in the third period in which the latter scored only 9 points. The Rizal Street-based squad unleashed its might from the opening buzzer as it took the lead in the first, second and third periods, scoring 23-12, 49-38, and 66-47, respectively.
LNU-FQD Cobalts will face the champion of the Tarlac City leg of the League in a winner-take-all championship game, in Dagupan City, this week in which the champion will compete in the league’s national championships, in Manila, in March.
