Dagupan CDRRMC is regional Gawad Kalasag Awardee

THE Dagupan City government was presented the prestigious Gawad Kalasag Award for being the regional winner in disaster preparedness under the Independent Chartered Component City Category.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) was adjudged the best in the region for its outstanding contributions in strengthening the resilience and adaptive capacities of communities to disaster risks.

Councilor Jeslito Seen and CDRRM Officer Ronaldo de Guzman received the award for the city government in a ceremony last February 6 at the Hotel Ariana in Bauang, La Union.
De Guzman credited the achievement to the dynamic and results-oriented leadership of Mayor Belen T. Fernandez and the implementation of a comprehensive, multi-stakeholder and community-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) program.
“This year we will continue our effective disaster mitigation and preparedness program for the welfare and well-being of every Dagupeño,” said de Guzman.
Dagupan continues to develop and implement its own disaster management and emergency response measures including the establishment of the B.E.L.E.N. 16911 emergency hotline, creation of Public Assistance and Response Management Center (PARMC), year-round earthquake and fire drills, free swimming lessons, identification of privately hosted evacuation centers, construction of new two-storey school buildings, purchase of additional equipment such as ambulance, amphibian trucks, and fire trucks, and disaster preparedness trainings and workshops for barangay disaster coordinating councils and other private organizations.
The city has also been active in its climate change mitigation program through tree planting and clean-up activities.
Through these programs, Dagupan became more pro-active and better prepared for disasters following its experience from the destructive July 16, 1990 earthquake.
Mayor Fernandez said that the city government is working hand-in-hand with local communities and officials in dealing with disaster preparedness and mitigation plans.
Gawad Kalasag is a national awards program that recognizes exemplary achievements of local governments, agencies, the private sector and individuals in the field of disaster management and humanitarian assistance.
