TO further boost its preparations for natural calamities, the Dagupan City government recently acquired a state-of-the-art earthquake intensity meter capable of reading tremors during or after an earthquake.

The device, provided by Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), in partnership with the government of Japan, through a memorandum of agreement with the city, was installed at the Public Alert Response and Management Center (PARMC) last week.

Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, along with City Administrator Farah Marie G. Decano, CDRRMC head Ronald de Guzman, and General Services Officer Engineer Melchor Guiang witnessed the installation of the equipment.

Fernandez said the intensity meter is important since it is also being used as a guide to disaster preparedness and response.

The new earthquake developing device is connected to a computer with access to the internet and all information gathered are sent to a server where the data are evaluated.

“The device will help in transmitting real-time data to the Phivolcs database for an accurate description of an earthquake,” said Melchor Lasala, Phivolcs Science Research Specialist.

“I believe that there is great importance in being alert and prepared for any form of disaster all the times and that everyone should be aware of different calamities,” said Fernandez. (CIO)
