CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION

THE Chinese-Filipino community in Dagupan will celebrate the Chinese New Year on Feb. 19 not only with fireworks and colorful lion and dragon dances but with a month-long cultural fair and exhibits showcasing Chinese culture, customs and traditions, including their culinary arts.

This was bared by Councilor Maybelyn Fernandez when she sponsored a resolution in the city council seeking the closure of  Zamora Street beside city hall to give way to the Chinese cultural fair and exhibits from February 7 to the first week of March.

Councilor Fernandez said she filed the resolution in response to the letter of Mayor Belen Fernandez asking the city council to adopt a resolution seeking temporary closure of Zamora Street for the planned cultural presentation of the Chinese-Filipino community in Dagupan.

Mayor Fernandez’s family is a member of the Chinese-Filipino community in Dagupan.

Her late father Jimmy Lim Fernandez was among the early Chinese settlers in Dagupan who opened a small bakery, then a sari-sari store that eventually grew into a grocery and as a supermarket that supplied the goods needed by sari-sari stores all over Pangasinan.

The businesses of late Fernandez patriarch were continued by his children led by Belen Fernandez who then established the first malls in Dagupan, the CSI Market Square and the CSI the City Mall.

The resolution was set for committee hearing last January 29 by the committees headed by Councilors Marvin Fabia and Jeslito Seen.
