AN incumbent  director of a transport cooperative in La Union and Pangasinan  was shot and wounded four days ahead of a scheduled election of the cooperative on Sunday, January 25.

The victim, Bonifacio Salting Padilla, a bus driver, and an incumbent member of the board of  directors of the La Union Pangasinan Cooperative, was shot and wounded by unidentified suspects on board a green/gray van without a plate number along the national highway in Barangay Tocok, San Fabian in the afternoon of January 21.

Padilla is seeking reelection as an officer  of LUPA Cooperative Association, transport group servicing the route from San Fernando City, La Union to Dagupan City.

He sustained two gun shot wounds on his right shoulder and left arm but despite his wounds he managed to continue driving his vehicle until he reached Barangay Mabilao where he asked for help.

He was immediately brought by relatives to the Region 1 Medical Center in Dagupan  City for treatment where he is now recuperating.

After the shooting, the suspects fled to the north direction where they were pursued by responding policemen but to no avail.

The police suspect that the possible motive in the attempt on the life of Padilla may have something to do with the coming LUPA election.

Five pieces of empty shells and one slug possibly from Caliber 45 pistol were found at the crime scene. (Leonardo Micua)
