MANGALDAN–The municipal government is set to construct the Mangaldan Social Service Center (MSSC) this year that will house battered women and children with special needs in the town.

Mayor Bonafe Parayno said she saw the need for a center that will cater to the needs of battered women after the town’s first women empowerment meeting, attended by hundreds of women residents. She said most of the questions and issues raised were about domestic violence and neglected children.

‘I know in our culture, admitting domestic violence by a victim is still a taboo because we wanted to protect our family’s image”, said Parayno, so she is confident that the center will slowly change the culture of abuse and encourage families to seek counseling.

The center will also serve children with special needs, including those arrested by the police since it will be part of the Mangaldan Police Station’s (MPS) ‘Oplan Santino’.

“It is part of our 2015 budget with P2 million allocation”, said Parayno. (Hilda Austria/PNA)
