2015 BAGOONG FESTIVAL

LINGAYEN– Two iconic landmarks will be unveiled in the town to help promote it’s popular product –Lingayen bagoong!

Councilor Judy Vargas, chairman of this year’s Lingayen Bagoong Festival, disclosed in an interview, that two giant bagoong (salted fish sauce) jars locally known as ‘pasig’ will be set in place in this year’s festival to serve as the town’s landmarks.

‘Pasig’ or earthen jars are used traditionally to produce bagoong through fermentation.

Bagoong is Lingayen’s one town, one product (OTOP), and is considered as the best in the country.

She said that except for Lingayen being known as home of the Provincial Capitol, there are no iconic landmarks that can be identified with the town

The unveiling of the two giant ‘pasig,’ measuring 14 feet tall, at the town plaza on January 24 will be the highlight of the celebration.

Vargas said one of the jars is made of fiberglass while the other is made of rubber, each having a unique design. The fiberglass pasig will be paraded around the town in a motorcade.

Bagoong Festival 2015 will kick off with the “Bagoong Car Show” on Jan. 18 at the Dela Cruz Auditorium.

Other main highlights of this year’s festival include Smart 3-Point Shootout/Bingo Basketball Friendship Game: LGU versus ABC, SMB Night; Smart Night group dance competition, a street dance competition, the ‘Banbanwit’ float parade  and “Taway-taway” or a cooking exhibition of dishes with bagoong as base, bagoong-making demonstration, and GMA Kapuso fiesta.

“We want the bagoong makers to be the front liners in this activity,” she said. There are 29 registered bagoong processing plants in Barangays Maniboc and Pangapisan Norte.

The first Bagoong Festival was held in 2011 under the leadership of former Mayor Ernesto Castañeda. This year’s edition will be the first time the Bagoong Festival will be celebrated separately from the town fiesta.

The town fiesta is celebrated every first Saturday and Sunday of January.- (Johanne Macob)
