Island villagers’ livelihood gets a boost

NINETY-seven families from the three island villages of Dagupan City are now looking forward to earning more from their livelihood after receiving various fishing gears from the Dagupan City government last week.
Mayor Belen Fernandez formally turned over the equipment to selected beneficiaries from Lomboy, Salapingao and Pugaro as the city government’s participation in the celebration of the 400th jubilee of Dagupan as a parish under the patronage of St. John the Evangelist, who was a fisherman when he was called by Jesus Christ to join him as his apostle.
Speaking for the beneficiaries, Barangay Chairman Delfin de Guzman of the village of Salapingao thanked Mayor Fernandez for helping improve the lives of small fishermen that depend on the city’s river system for livelihood.
The barangay councils of the island villages have been charged with the responsibility to oversee the use of the donated equipment by the beneficiaries.
At least 32 families from Salapingao received as many number of oyster beds that they can install along the river to enable them to raise oysters year-round. An oyster bed costs P12,000.
Meanwhile, another 15 families have been given the opportunity to take their turns in using three fishing boats donated to them by the city government.
Salapingao also got its share from the 50 bancas for fisherfolks in the village to use to fish in the rivers. A banca costs P8,000.
Mayor Fernandez earlier provided the island villages of Lomboy, Salapingao and Pugaro, including Pantal, one fish cage each for raising high-value fishes such as siganid (malaga), grouper (lapu-lapu) and seabass on a trial basis. The experiment proved successful. (Leonardo Micua)
