BAUTISTA—The one year and one month old conjoined twins, Jerrylyn and Jennylyn De Guzman of Bautista town were brought to Taiwan last January 9 by the Tzu Chi Foundation for an operation, to be separated and enable the twins to live normal lives.

The case of the De Guzman twins was endorsed by Mario Lim, president of PANDA DFCCA Fire Brigade Volunteers to Tzu Chi Phils after he watched a documentary on GMA Network Television last January 13, 2014 about the twins’ situation and their parents’ plead for help.

“Moved by their struggle, we sought the assistance of Tzu Chi Foundation, an international Buddhist charity foundation to help the family De Guzman on their situation”, said Lim.

The twins were then two-month old when volunteers from Tzu Chi Foundation visited their home in Bautista, doctors told them that the twins were not yet ready for an operation until they are ten-month old.

“Tzu Chi and our group supported the twins with their needed vitamins, clothes and milk so that their bodies will be ready for the needed operation”, said Lim.

Ludy De Guzman, mother of the twins admitted their incapacity to provide the finances for the operation of her daughters.

“My husband and I have a daily income amounting only to P200 daily from selling onions we collect from a land we do not own”, she said.

She tearfully expressed her gratitude to the two foundations for taking care of her daughters in preparation for the operation which will be shouldered by the Tzu Chi foundation.

In an article published in Taiwan Tzu Chi Philippines website, the twins were described as “attached together at the bosom. They are part of the 33 percent of all conjoined twins around the world categorized as omphalopagus, who may share a liver, gastrointestinal or genitourinary functions”.

Lim disclosed the family will stay in Taiwan for two to three months after the operation until the twins fully recovered.

“We will still monitor them even after the operation”, said Lim. (Hilda Austria)
