SOME 20 families from five barangays here were chosen as beneficiaries of the community food production-cum-nursery program as pilot models for the city’s organic agricultural production program.

The selected families from barangay Salisay, Tebeng, Bonuan Boquig, Lucao and Malued will receive composting sheds, seeds and garden tools, they will use in producing organic crops.

The families will also undergo a farmer’s class to learn composting and Vermiculture.

The beneficiaries will be clustered to make organic fertilizers for their gardens from biodegradable materials or trashes.

The project is expected to see results after four months.

According to City Agriculturist Émma Molina, an agricultural fair for the organic products will be featured at the Bangus Festival 2015.

Meanwhile, some 150 farmers in the city will soon have their own irrigation facility from the Shallow Tube Well (STW) provided by the Department of Agriculture (DA) through the city government.

Dagupan City has 68 hectares of farmlands.

“Our farmers depend on the excess water from the irrigation in Calasiao and Mangaldan, so during dry season, they do not plant for lack of irrigation”, said Molina.

With the STW, farmers can now plant their second and third crops.

The agricultural projects were funded under the grassroots participatory budgeting system for fisher folks and farmers. (Hilda Martin Austria)
