BUGALLON—Fully adorned twenty-four carabaos in colorful decors, representing the villages of this town, were paraded in the Poblacion when the town marked its Foundation Anniversary last January 12.

Bugallon, which has a big iconic carabao statue as its landmark, celebrated Bugallon Day by honoring its booming carabao industry.

“Carabao is our town’s symbol that stands for the hard work and perseverance of our people,” said town Mayor Jumel Espino.

Brgy. Buenlag’s entry grabbed the top award, including P10,000 cash, in the “best dressed carabao” contest.

Espino disclosed his administration will relaunch their carabao milk program in May since their number is increasing.

Last July 2014, the municipal government launched a program providing a daily milk supply to malnourished kids in the town.

“From our 8% percent malnutrition rate, we’re now down to 2% after that successful milk program,” Espino said and added that the second wave of the program will target zero malnutrition.

Along with the milk program, the mayor expressed hope that the carabao milk processing plant project in their municipality will be realized this year.

Bugallon Day also celebrated the heroism of General Jose Torres Bugallon, after whom the town was named.

According to the Wikipedia, Gen. Bugallon “was a Filipino military officer who fought in the Philippine-American War and is known as the “Hero of the Battle of La Loma”, where he was fatally wounded.”

In 1921, to perpetuate the hero’s memory, Pangasinan Congressman Mauro Navarro sponsored a bill changing the municipality of Salasa, the hero’s birthplace to Bugallon.- (Johanne Macob/PNA)
