5 Pangasinenses Shine in Open Chess Tilt

LINGAYEN- – -Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. expressed elation over the results of the 6th Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. Open Chess Tournament held on December 29-30 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) gymnasium after five products of the province’s yearly chess clinics and tournaments made it among the winners in the open chess tournament.

This developed after siblings from San Fabian, Dennis Gutierrez III and Dennis Gutierrez II, bagged the 1st and 2nd spots in the kiddie category respectively during the two-day open chess tournament while International Master Haridas Pascua placed 3rd under the adult category.

The two-day chess tournament, a part of the continuing program of the present administration for chess, was participated in by the country’s top caliber woodpushers including International Master Haridas Pascua, Pascua is a product of Gov. Espino administration’s chess clinics and tournaments that has evolved over the past six years of implementation into the only continuous chess program in the country. More than 200 chess wizards are battled it out in different game categories.

The governor said that the envisioned chess academy is all set to be established in April this year, even as he admitted that the project is a long-overdue endeavor of his administration to further hone the playing skills of local chess players.

It will be recalled that the Espino administration established a continuous program for chess since 2009 to support the younger generation’s prowess in it and to further discover the potentials of the young woodpushers from Pangasinan and from other parts of the country.

Other Pangasinan chess players who made it to rank 14 in adult category were National Master Giovanni Mejia and Israellito Rilloraza, rank 5, under kiddie category.

The adult category top 10 winners were: IM Oliver Dimakiling of Davao City (1st), IM Emmanuel Senador of Manila (2nd), IM Haridas Pascua of Pangasinan (3rd), GM Oliver Barbosa of Rizal province (4th), NM Emmanuel Emperado-Las Pinas (5th), NM Alcon John Datu-Quezon City (6th), IM Paulo Bersamina-Pasay City (7th), FM Mari Joseph Turqueza-Quezon City (8th), IM Joel Pimentel-Manila (9th), Virgen Gil Ruaya-Manila (10th).

The hard fought chess tourney under the adult category even relegated another well-known Grandmaster Richard Bitoon of Cebu to rank 15.

The Gutierrez brothers brought home P7,000 and P5,000 plus trophies while Pangasinan’s pride IM Pascua went home with P15,000 cash plus trophy for placing 3rd under the adult category.

Adult top winner Dimakiling received P25,000 while runner-up Senador pocketed P20,000 plus trophies for both.

Awarded with category prizes were: IM Haridas Pascua-Top Local, Leodigario Ricana of Cebu-Top Senior, WFM Cherry Ann Mejia of San Jacinto, Pangasinan-Top Lady, Archeon Mer Bautista of Lingayen-Youngest Player, and Mecel Angela Gadut of Ilocos Sur-Top Scorer (5 years old and below).

All category winners received P1,000 each plus medals. /RRB
