Wildcats seize crown

ALAMINOS CITY —- Showing fighting spirit at the second half especially at the homestretch, the Wildcats quintet of Vice Mayor Jing Aquino completed its stunning sweep against defending champions Red Lions of Mayor Arthur Celeste, 87-79, in the best-of-three championship series to wrest the crown of the 2014 Alaminos City LGU Olympics basketball tournament held on December 15 at the city plaza.

The Wildcats won their first game 68-65 on Dec. 12, but found themselves trailing by 17 points, 19-2, halfway at the first quarter. It orchestrated a ferocious rally at the second and third relying on an unforgiving full-court press and penetration moves anchored by Janus Tamayo and Randy Saman whose combined 25 points helped take the lead, 68-54. They never looked back, up to the final buzzer to the delight of the Wildcat’s supporters. “We won the game convincingly and hopefully we can defend the title next year,” said the elated Vice Mayor Jing Aquino

Tamayo had a game high 18 points and Saman contributed 17. Orlando Agoloro and Manuel de Leon scored a team high 15 points apiece and former PBA player Jun Marzan had eight for the Red Lions. (JAG, Jr.)
