DAGUPAN CITY – Students in the island barangay of Salapingao received their very own life vests as part of the local government’s program on giving priority to safety awareness within communities and schools.

The life vests will be used by students and residents from Sitio Dupo, which is separated by a river from the barangay mainland where the Salapingao Elementary School is located, in case the boat they are riding on capsizes.

The city government previously provided a motorboat with a 14-seating capacity to the barangay, which is now being used to transport students and residents to and from Sitio Dupo.

Mayor Belen Fernandez bared that one of her main goals is to safeguard every student in the city by providing them with the necessary programs and projects that will help them in their daily lives.

“It is always our priority to keep every child in the city safe, and I hope that these life vests will be of help in making sure that the students can get to their school safely,” said Fernandez.

After receiving the life jackets for Salapingao, Punong Barangay Delfin de Guzman thanked the mayor for her concern to the children and said that they will use the floatation devices properly.

De Guzman added that the life vests will help in preventing any accidents, especially drowning, for those crossing the river.

Labis ang aming pasasalamat kay Mayor Belen sa ibinigay niyang kagamitan para sa mga estudyante. Malaking bagay itong life vest, lalo na sa mga bata, para sila ay ligtas,” said de Guzman.

Parents of the students also expressed their gratitude and said that they will ensure that their children wear their jackets at all times when riding a boat. (Patrick Cendreda)
