MALASIQUI—-Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas publicly made a pitch for former third congresswoman Rachel Arenas as Pangasinan’s candidate for a senate seat in 2016.

Roxas told about 5,000 well-wishers who attended the birthday celebration of Arenas last Saturday that many are hoping “she would be of help, not only to her district, but the entire Philippines.”

Roxas’ presence and message virtually confirmed reports circulating in Pangasinan that the administration party is grooming Arenas for a slot in the party’s senatorial slate for the 2016 elections.

Arenas, daughter of now 3rd District Rep. Rosemarie “Baby” Arenas, was joined on stage by Senator Grace Poe who also gave her message of support for Arenas.

Roxas has been inviting Arenas to functions he attends across the country.

RACHEL BDAY

DILG Secretary Mar Roxas and Senator Grace Poe make a pitch for birthday celebrant Rachel Arenas as a candidate for senator in the 2016 elections. They are joined by Arenas’ mom, Rep. Rosemarie “Baby” Arenas.

Senate President Franklin Drilon, who was also present during the birthday celebration, said that he and Senator Sonny Angara came decided to personally greet the young Arenas “because she would be our colleague in the Senate after the elections in 2016”.

“Indeed it is important to us to have someone like Rachel Arenas in the Senate, an intelligent, not only good but also beautiful,” he added.

He urged Pangasinenses to support her bid so that Pangasinan will again have its own senator.

For his part, Angara said he and Arenas were colleagues then in Congress whom he described as someone who established good relationship with fellow congressmen.

Rachel was a two-term congresswoman and was unopposed in her third term but was substituted by her mom.

In her message to the people, Arenas said ,“Each day of journey is an act a blessing from God, an act of love, kindness, to lend a helping hand, to be responsible stewards of our gifts and talents, to forgive and to right the wrongs, to walk not with fear but with faith and trust in God, to serve you, to serve this province and to serve our beloved country”.

Arenas is now a governor of the Philippine Red Cross.

She also thanked President Aquino for his support for Pangasinan.

Among her other guests were congressmen, governors and other local officials not only from Pangasinan but from different provinces too.

Arenas, who thanked Roxas for surprising her with his presence, addressed him as “the next president of the Republic of the Philippines”, to the cheer of her guests.

Arenas credited her mother for her early success in politics. “All my life, she has been like a genie, a fairy godmother, indeed she made me feel that my wish is her command”.

“Whatever you see in me, the kindness, my love for the poor and public service is wholly coming from her, my mother,” she said. (Tita R. Roces)
