THE Fishpond Owners, Operators, Fisherfolks Association in Dagupan City, Inc. (FOOFADCI) plans to set up its own buying station for their bangus produce.

According to FOOFADCI and National Federation of Fish Growers of the Philippines president, Ed Maramba, a buying station will enable to increase the profits of small fisherfolks since it will eliminate consignacion or middlemen.

For a minimal fee in the buying station, the fisherfolks, through their cooperatives, can bring all their produce in one area for direct selling.

The project, which has the support of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and Department of Trade and Industry will be installed in Dagupan City soon.

He added that if the station has no place in Dagupan City, it will be brought to Alaminos City or Bolinao. The buying station project will require a storage facility.

Meanwhile, Maramba said that the development of the fish industry in the country remains unstable because of high costs of production and lack of government support.

He said the price of feeds in the country that ranges from P28-33 per kilogram and the price of fry and fingerlings which is P58 per kilogram while the price of feeds ranges from P0.5-0.85 and fry and fingerlings is priced P13 in Indonesia.

“The Indonesian government provides subsidy and fishery supplies are tax-free,” he said.

“That’s why we fear the ASEAN integration will just eat our industry,” Maramba added.

He said the producers will also propose the production of ‘uniform’ feeds for every stage. (Johanne Macob)
