City’s PWDs get customized wheelchairs
THE Dagupan City government, led by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) distributed 24 customized wheelchairs to persons with disabilities (PWDs) at the city plaza last week.
In addition to the standard and Rough Rider wheelchairs, some walkers and crutches were also distributed to qualified beneficiaries.
Rhyza Ventenilla, Dagupan Area Service Missionary, cited the close coordination between the city government and LDS Charities for the implementation of the project.
LDSC conducted wheelchair assessment trainings for the city’s evaluators on the proper assessment and prescription of wheelchairs to ensure that each device is perfectly fitted for the patient and is suitable for his/her physical condition.

“We are very happy that Mayor Fernandez has been a great partner in this program, wherein the main goal is to raise a PWD’s self-reliance and productivity,” said Ventenilla.
One of the beneficiaries was Leonardo Garpo from Barangay Pogo Chico. Garpo said that he suffered a mild stroke last year which resulted to numbness of lower limbs, making the simplest of task such as walking difficult.
“Napakalaking tulong talaga itong ibinigay na wheelchair sa akin para maayos na akong makagalaw at makapunta sa iba’t-ibang lugar. Biyaya itong inihatid sa aming mga may kapansanan ni Mayor Belen at ng Latter-Day Saints,” said Garpo.
Mayor Fernandez hailed the humanitarian efforts of the LDS Charities, especially for the PWD sector. (CIO)
