COJUANGCO UPDATES

SENATOR Cynthia Villar made good on her promise to give 200 armchairs for Bayambang Central School.

The chairs were turned over Thursday to the Parents-Teachers Community Association (PTCA) for use in the old school site in Poblacion here.

Villar gave the donation upon learning that many parents and pupils are desirous to return to their old location where the PTCA, through the help of Good Samaritans, have started to rebuild the abandoned and dilapidated classrooms.

Engr. Rosendo So, whose group Samahang Industrya at Agrikultura (SINAG) has started the move to Save Bayambang Central School, said Senator Loren Legarda also expressed willingness to help in the restoration of the century- old Gabaldon Building of the school.

So said the restoration of the old school building is relevant to Legarda’s bill that proposes the restoration of Gabaldon buildings in the country to be supported by appropriation through the Department of Education.

He said there is, in fact, a Republic Act that mandates the preservation and maintenance of Gabaldon Buildings.

He added that there is also a congressional inquiry that will be scheduled soon on the propriety and legality of the temporary transfer of the school to Barangay Bical. The House’s Committee on Rules already passed on first reading the other day a resolution for the conduct of the probe, he said.

“This is a national issue because we do not want central schools to be easily relocated to other area just because a mayor so desires” So said.

Former Fifth District Rep. Mark Cojuangco had already donated P1 million for the repair of another Gabaldon building in the school. SINAG, through its members, also gave funds worth P400,000 for the school repair.

Others donated armchairs and teachers’ tables and chairs. There are about 2,000 pupils of BCS. More have signified their willingness to help, So added.

Wood is being used to restore the walls to maintain its old structure, he pointed out.

While there are many other legal issues hounding the controversial transfer of the school, So said the immediate concern is to rehabilitate the old school site to make it ready for occupancy for pupils and teachers in case they are allowed to return to their original location.

He said the return to the old location will spare parents and school children of additional transportation expenses.

“We are for the welfare of Bayambang. I am not from that town. We just wanted to help,” he said.

He added that schools need to impart a lesson to the young generation not to easily give up on their farm lots and simply selling them when they grow up.

“We are educating the youth through this example,” he said.

He added that SINAG also had a joint venture with the Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Pangasinan for the construction of new school building in Asingan and Rosales town to make the young realize the importance of education.
