DAGUPAN CITY – Public and private schools in this city have successfully implemented the Wrappers to Pavers program initiated by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd), and multinational company Unilever.

The project calls for the collection of plastic wastes in schools for conversion into pavers. The concrete blocks will be used as bricks for roadways, pathways and other beautification purposes of schools.

One school that has successfully implemented the project is Saint Albert the Great (SAG) School in Barangay Malued. Some 2,000 pavers received by the school were used in the construction of an elevated seating area and a pathway connecting the quadrangle to the school cafeteria.

Adelaida Carvajal, SAG principal, said the program is laudable because it involves schoolchildren in waste segregation as a basic step towards responsible waste management.

“One of school’s philosophies is to teach students to care for the environment and practice responsible recycling. And through the Wrappers to Pavers project of the mayor, the students here have fully supported that advocacy,” said Carvajal.

Mayor Fernandez said that proper waste management is one of her advocacies and is happy that the youth sector has showed their active participation in maintaining the cleanliness of their schools.

Fernandez added that the partnership between Unilever and the Dagupan LGU will continue in the coming school years with a wider participation of both the elementary and high school levels. (CIO)
