Lingayen – Team Pangasinan volleybelles Melanie Carrera and Cindy Benitez trounced University of the East (UE) team and captured the 4th Leg Petron ladies beach volleyball tournament championship title in a two-set final match played in UE – Caloocan City campus last October 10.

Carrera, a provincial government employee detailed at the Provincial Engineering Office and Benitez, a Pangasinense from Mangaldan town who works at Benguet Electric Cooperative (BENECO) advanced to the finals after a sweeping campaign early in the eliminations, slamming the players from Dasmarinas City, Marikina City and St. Michael College teams.

In other games, UE overpowered Marikina City in the semis (21-12) while Team Pangasinan defeated team Pangasinan B (21-9).

In the final game, Team Pangasinan racked up the first two sets (21-10), (21-19) and sealed the victory (2-0).
Team Pangasinan B players Ma. Nieza and Ma. Jeziela Viray, twin siblings who are now senior high school students at the Pangasinan School of Arts and Trades (PSAT), pocketed the bronze medal.

The provincial government led by Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. expressed elation over the feat of Pangasinense beach volleyball players who successfully defended their beach volleyball crown. Carrera and Benetez won in the beach volleyball tournament of Pangasinan Pista’y Dayat celebration last May.

The two teams are perennial strong contenders in the Beach Volleyball Tournament of Pangasinan Pista’y Dayat annually sponsored by the provincial government and Congressman Leopoldo Bataoil.
