DAGUPAN CITY—The mayor of Milpitas City, California, USA who is a native Dagupeño, encouraged the delegates of Manlingkor ya Kalangweran to instill love for Dagupan culture and its Pangasinan language in them.

This was what the five students that visited Milpitas City for a study exchange program, recall about Mayor Jose “Joe” Esteves who is seeking his sixth term as mayor in the November polls. He told them “to forever love the culture of Dagupan and to enhance the use of Pangasinan language”.

They said he noted that many Pangasinan families and residents no longer use Pangasinan language in their homes and schools and he asked them to lead in the campaign to keep the language alive.

Margauerite Marie Ferrer of Ednas School, one of the five-student delegates, said Esteves spoke to them in Pangasinan to show them he is a true-blue Pangasinense and proud of his Filipino roots.

Leona Ericka Elegores of Francisco Q. Duque Medical Foundation Special Science High School this city, said Esteves is very hospitable and “very down-to-earth.”

David Justin Dawis of Dagupan City National High School, said Esteves encouraged them to succeed in their endeavors, adding that success comes to those who persevere in life, despite their status in life.

Kyle Patrick Ussher of Oakridge International School of Young Leaders, said he admires Esteves’ humility as he is very approachable despite his great achievements in life.

The delegates were one in acknowledging that their trip to Milpitas helped them understand the diverse cultural and community perspective of the students in that city and helped them expand their views about other countries and nationalities.

The students thanked the city government for facilitating their US trip and for taking them in their needs.

While in Milpitas, the delegation also witnessed the signing of the sisterhood pact by Mayors Belen Fernandez and Esteves. The signing was witnessed by members of the Dagupan City Association of Northern California as well. (Tita Roces)
