UCAAP JIMMY FERNANDEZ BASKETBALL CHALLENGE

UPANG-PHINMA Flames leaned on its three marquee players Jomar Ordoña, Jioni Laca and Ardel Valdez combining 49 points to frustrate the hawking AIE College Green Eagles, 89-66, to grab the first of two slots in the finals of 2014 UCAAP Jimmy Fernandez Basketball Challenge.

The scorching Flames with plenty of gas hidden in its armory, never gave their opponents a chance to douse their blaze from the start up to the last quarter with forward-center Ordoña finishing a game high 19 points, power-forward Laca contributing 18 and point-guard Valdez adding 11 to stop its championship opponent in the best-of-three series starting October 18 at DWAD gym.

“We are now prepared for the finals and it will be a close battle,” said Flames head coach Jay Ronquillo.
In the other game, the defending champion Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes battered the International College of Excellence Maharlika in just two quarters, 57-27, after the latter subsequently decide to forfeit the match, to seize the second of two berths in the finals. They will face the Flames for the tiara.

“NU won the 2014 UAAP season, LNU will win the 2014 UCAAP season,” bragged Dukes head coach Angel Gumarang. (JAG, Jr.)
