DepEd sports festival reels off Oct. 24

THE Division of City Schools of the Department of Education announced recently the holding of its month-long Annual Sports Festival on October 24 at the People’s Astrodome in Dagupan City.

Also known as the City Meet, it will be participated in by 3,000 students and officials of primary and secondary schools of the four districts and eight private secondary schools in the city competing in 17 team and individual sports and events.

According to Division Superintendent Dr. Gloria R. Torres, this year’s activity serves as the culminating sports program of the division to select qualified athletes to represent DepEd Dagupan City in the forthcoming Region 1 Athletic Meet.

DepEd Division Education Supervisor Edilberto R. Abalos said the sports events athletics, volleyball, basketball, sepak takraw, badminton, baseball, football, gymnastics, chess, arnis, taekwondo, lawn tennis, billiards, futsal, and table tennis.

Eliminations in basketball have started in August and are presently played in different venues every Saturday and Sunday. A 40-man swimming team for both levels has been formed and the qualified swimmers are set to undergo conditioning and training at the city’s swimming pool.

Volleyball eliminations have begun last Friday with 35 teams participating and the selection process may last until first week of December. — Philamer C. Celi
