LINGAYEN—The staging of the 4th Pangasinan Age Group Chess Championship started yesterday October 18 and will end today October 19 at the Pangasinan Training and development Center (PTDC).

Modesto Operania, executive assistant III and provincial sports coordinator, said the chess games this year had more participants than last year’s hosting with the innovations instituted by the provincial government and the Pangasinan Chess League since the launching of the clinics in 2009.

Meanwhile, Juan Vicente R. Sison, president of Pangasinan Chess League (PCL) said the chess clinic last month helped local players because it taught “theory and application.”

Grand Master (GM) Eugene Torre, who was the guest of honor in the opening ceremony of the chess clinic in September, commended the leadership of Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. and congratulated Pangasinan for being the only province in the country to have an active and continuous program on chess.

The chess tournament this weekend had seven age group categories: 8-under, 10-under, 12-under, 14-under, 16-under, 18-under, and 20-under. The format, according to Sison was adopted from FIDE. (PIOI/RRB)
