MANGALDAN—The town is set to honor and celebrate the life of the elderlies when it observes the Senior Citizen’s Month on October with its version of “Adopt a Grandparent Day.”

“We want to instill love and connection between the elderlies and their grandchildren and strengthen their family bond”, said Mayor Bonafe De Vera- Parayno in an interview with The PUNCH, who presided over the coordination meeting on Tuesday with the Department of Education (DepEd) Mangaldan and the Municipal Federation of Senior Citizens (MFSC) for the preparation of the activities.

She said that due to age and generation gap, with the young people so engrossed with different gadgets and technologies, some have become disconnected in their relationship with their grandparents.

As part of the ‘Adopt a Grandparent Day’ on October 1, preschoolers to grade three pupils will be made to prepare a handmade card and drawings for their grandparents expressing their gratitude and remembrance.

“The senior citizens will be honored on that day to make them feel that we appreciate them and we’ll give them time to bond with the children to bridge the gap between them”, said Parayno.

Parayno said the activities for the elderlies this year will be focused on addressing their emotional or relational needs other than educational tours, etc.

“We will allow them to appreciate their significance as grandparents”.

Parayno also urged the business sector to help make the day special by hosting promotional sales for the senior citizens.

DepEd has suggested to make the ‘Adopt a Grandparent Day’ an annual celebration in the town through an ordinance. Councilor Manny Cabrera, president of the MFSC Mangaldan vowed to sponsor the ordinance to the Sangguniang Bayan. (Hilda M. Austria)
