When lighting struck two

BOLINAO—The bodies of two brothers who were struck and killed by a lightning while fishing along the coastal area here had been recovered, the town police chief said.

P/Chief Inspector Marcos Anod said Wednesday that the remains of Rommel, 21 and Ramil Mendoza, 41, had been retrieved separately in different days by search and rescue teams.

Anod said the two, with their family and other companions, went fishing on board separate wooden vessel (locally known as balsa) behind the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute when lightning hit them before lunch Saturday.

They were just near the shoreline, he added.

Their father, on board a separate boat, saw them struck and fall several meters before they disappeared under the water.

Ramil’s body was first recovered on the same day but his brother’s cadaver was retrieved only last Tuesday along coastal waters off Barangay Lucero.

Anod said it’s possible they could have been saved alive if they did not drown after lightning struck them. (Tita Roces)
