Two-Day sked for Dagupan Bangus lifted

DAGUPAN City Mayor Belen Fernandez has temporarily lifted the exclusive two-day market schedule for selling the Dagupan bangus after almost a year of implementation following her dialogue with consignacion operators and market inspectors last Aug. 5 at the City Museum.

The mayor made the move after noting the difficulty of some consignacion operators to comply with the policy compelling the exclusive selling of Dagupan bangus on Fridays and Saturdays in a bid to promote the local bangus industry for the benefit of fish farmers in the city.

The dialogue was attended by City Agriculturist Emma Molina, PNP Maritime Police Policarpio Cayabyab, Councilors Jeslito Seen, Jose Netu Tamayo and Marvin Fabia.

“I understand why some of these consignacion operators didn’t follow the two-day market schedule for selling exclusively Dagupan bangus –because they are in business ” said Fernandez.

However, the mayor clarified that the lifting of the schedule is only temporary while she continues to dialogue with the affected sectors.

Meanwhile Fernandez bared a plan to recommend to the Sangguning Panlungsod to pass an ordinance requiring all traders bringing in bangus to Dagupan to present certificates of origin from local governments stating where the milkfish came from.

The issuance of certificates of origin will be part of the Dagupan bangus branding process aimed to distinguish the products coming from other places. Through the issuance of this certificate, the mayor said, it would help fishpond owners and vendors whose businesses are facing stiff competition from other milkfish growers such as those from Bulacan and Saranggani.

The City Agriculture Office (CAO), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), City Mayor’s Office (CMO) and fishpond owners will be tasked to scrutinize and issue the certificates of origin to bangus traders.

The mayor also bared that BFAR Regional Director Nestor Domenden is set to ask the national government within this week  to fund the establishment of a bangus branding center in the city. (CIO/Jennifer Soriano)
