PWDs showcase skills in regional competition

LINGAYEN—More than 20 persons with disabilities (PWDs) were given the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills during  “Kakayahan 2014,” the regional skills competition for PWDs held on August 13 at the Dagupan City Astrodome.

Noemi Escalona, focal person for PWD affairs at the Capitol, said the activity highlighted the PWDs skills and potentials to become part of the country’s productive work force either as workers or entrepreneurs, and more importantly to make people more aware that PWDs can be competitive despite their handicap.

She said the Philippine’s track record in various world competitions showed that with enough training, PWD workers can perform better and even outdo counterparts from more progressive countries.

The participants competed in painting, photography, floral arrangement, waste reuse, cake decoration, cooking, creating web pages, desktop publishing and text processing.

Among the winners from the AVRC were Preciosa Quino (deaf and mute) in photography, Annie Rose Rumbaoa (dwarfism) in cooking; Frederick Aguilar (mute) in waste management; Rhoda Olermo (ortho disability) in desktop publishing and Jennifer Garcia (ortho disability) in English text processing.

Winners will represent the region at the national level on December 3 during the International Day of PWDs where they will have the chance to advance to the international competition at the “2015 International Abilympics” in France. (PIO/ADV)
