AS the province braces for the typhoon season, the Pangasinan provincial government reminded local government units anew that frontline disaster preparedness and response activities should be a priority concern at the barangay level.

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) continues to stress this and urged its barangay counterparts to be vigilant and proactive, its spokesperson, Avenix Arenas, said during the KBP Forum on July 10, 2014.

Barangay DRRMCs have been advised to plan and prepare using indigenous materials for rescue operations, Arenas said.

The PDRRMC also encourages the municipal and city DRRMCs to plan for contingencies using their calamity fund–70% for disaster preparedness and the 30% for emergency situations.

This month of July, the PDRRMC has embarked on activities starting this week in line with the theme “Kahandaan at Kaligtasan ng Pamayanan, Pundasyon ng Kaunlaran” for the National Disaster Consciousness Month.

These include a kick-off ceremony on July 14 at 7:30 a.m. at the Capitol Plaza in Lingayen; and the launching of an intensive information campaign, tree planting on July 25 at San Roque Dam watershed area, San Manuel; and flood evacuation drill at Brgy. Talibaew in Calasiao town on the third week of July.

Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan, also vice-chairman of the PDRRMC, said that the activities are aimed at reinforcing the people’s awareness and capabilities to deal with flooding in their communities. (Johanne R. Macob)
