LINGAYEN– The provincial government led by Governor Amado Espino Jr. recently relived the achievement of Pangasinan’s young athletes in the Batang Pinoy 2013 national finals.

Last May 29, the Pangasinan basketball and cycling teams, who grabbed top awards in the sports event, paid a courtesy call to Espino who awarded them with cash incentives which they can use to purchase new sports equipment to further their skills.

“When I assumed as Governor, we’re not even participating in sports events. Now, we’re number ten among the 138 LGUs in the latest Batang Pinoy,” remarked Espino.

The provincial basketball team in the Batang Pinoy included siblings Trixie Alison Mamaril and Valerie Mea Mamaril, and Princess Sison – all with Pangasinan National High School (girls); Loms Vincent Marinas of Binmaley Catholic School, Mark Lester Castillo and Alexi Joshue Resurrection of Pangasinan National High School (boys).

The two Mamarils, Sison, Marinas and Castillo — along with athletes from other delegations — attended training in the United States last March 11-24 under the Sports Visitors Program of the US State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), as sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

The cycling team was composed of Malone Canlas, Jr. (Binmaley Catholic School), Emmanuel delos Santos (Pangasinan National High School) and Rayven Scott Evanz (St. Anthony Abbot Academy).

The Pangasinan team was also champion in volleyball in the Batang Pinoy national finals held in Bacolod City from January 28-February 1, 2014.

Meanwhile, the governor announced that along with the opening of classes in June, the province will also launch its chess and boxing academy at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Complex.–Johanne R. Macob
