Lingayen — “There is hope in life. You are blessed because you have the chance to pursue your dream.”

Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. said this when he led the awarding of financial assistance amounting Php3.46M (for the first semester of academic 2014-2015) to 433 academic scholars of the provincial government at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center on June 2.

Each scholar is entitled to Php8, 000-financial assistance per semester (Php16, 000 per academic year).

“We inspire them. We always tell them that they are equal with their peers,” Governor Espino said as he exhorted the scholars – who are mostly bright but poor – to do their best shots in college schooling to assure brighter future.

At present, the province has 386 Provincial Scholarship Fund Board (PSFB) scholars, 33 National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP) scholars, and 14 Federation of Pangasinan Muslim Association (FPMA) scholars.

The province also has scholars in 9 campuses of Pangasinan State University and in Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). The province is yet to accommodate scholars for the Alternative Learning System (ALS) in farthest towns in the province like Infanta and Umingan, the Governor said.

“These scholarship programs of the Governor seek to prepare young Pangasinenses and develop their competitiveness nationally and internationally,” Chief Administrative Officer Irmina Francisco, PSFB Chairman, said.

Aside from the comprehensive examination and thorough interview, we prioritize college entrants whose annual family income does not exceed to Php130, 000, Francisco said.

“We are strict in the retention of scholarship grant; but we do not fail to give the scholars encouragements,” she added.

More than 4,000 scholars who have availed of financial assistance for college schooling from the provincial government since Governor Espino assumed his office in 2007 are now successful in their chosen careers.

Top 1 examinee, Pauline Joy Roa, Urdaneta City National High School Valedictorian, lauded the provincial government for its scholarship program for college entrants. We should be thankful to Governor Espino for reaching out and supporting poor, but deserving students in the province,” the 16-year-old scholar said.

Results of the May 12 PSFB examination was released on May 26. Exams were held in Pangasinan National High School (PNHS) in Lingayen and Juan Macaraeg National High School in Binalonan with 758 examinees.  (By Mark Gerry Oblanca)
