SENIOR citizens flocked to the Dagupan City Plaza on  June 11 to witness the groundbreaking  of  a new  P3.4 million  Senior Citizens building.

The activity was led by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, along with Federation of Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines (FSCAP)-Dagupan Chapter President Luz Geminiano, Office of Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) President Atty. Cornelia Español, City Engineer Virginia Rosario, City Social Welfare and Development Officer Leah Aquino, Atty. Gonzalo T. Duque and  other officers and members of FSCAP and OSCA.

“I want our senior citizens to live longer and to be productive that is why we decided to put up a center exclusively for them,” Fernandez said.

She added that the building will serve to remind her of her love for senior citizens, especially her parents and grandparents.

The 170-square meter facility is a one-storey structure with pharmacy, kitchen, rest room, exercise area and function room where the elderlies can share their skills, enhance their literacy and meet new acquaintances.

The mayor’s other ongoing projects intended exclusively for senior citizens include literacy campaign, Kwento ni Lola Basyang story-telling program, twice a month medical mission, free cataract operation, free wheelchair, free eye glasses, among others.

OSCA President Español thanked Mayor Fernandez for the project which will benefit the 12,000 senior citizens in the city.

Meanwhile, the old senior citizen building along AB Fernandez West will be rehabilitated by the city government and converted  into a women’s center. (CIO)
