SOME 100 women availed of the free cervical and breast cancer screening conducted by the Philippine Medical Society (PMS) alongside the opening of its “Klinika ng Bayan” here on Tuesday.

The clinic is open every last Tuesday of the month and members of PMS and the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS) will provide free consultation to the city’s women residents.

Dr. Betha Fe Manaois-Castillo, president of PMS Pangasinan chapter, said Klinika will also screen for possible health problems of pregnant women in order to reduce mother and child mortality in support of the government’s millennium development goal.

The women, aged between 30-55, were screened through Visual Acetic Acid (VIA) in lieu of pop smear.

Castillo said screenings on women are important in order to detect cancer cases early.

Last year, two of the 600 women from Umingan, Alaminos City, Lingayen and Mangaldan screened by PMS in their outreach programs were discovered with cancer in their early stages.

“They were given proper attention and medication and they are doing well now,” Castillo said.

The PMS, POGS and the City Population Office also conducted lectures and forum for the women.

Mayor Belen Fernandez encouraged the city’s women to avail of the free services as she thanked the members of PMS and POGS for choosing Dagupan City as one of the recipients of their charitable projects.

Castillo, meanwhile, called for medicine donations for the Klinika ng Bayan. –Hilda Martin Austria
