Coming soon: “Dagupan bangus” tail-tagging

By June 1, 2014Business, News

BANGUS (milkfish) from Dagupan, known to the discerning palate as tastier than others grown or caught elsewhere, including other parts of Pangasinan, will soon be distinguishable in markets as the city government pursues tail-tagging as a branding strategy for the city’s number one product.

Mayor Belen Fernandez said tail-tagging is the method recommended by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) after a series of workshops aimed at protecting and increasing the sales of Dagupan bangus.

She said the plan calls for placing metal tags marked “Dagupan bangus” on the tails to indicate the origin and prevent retailers from marketing bangus sourced elsewhere as “Dagupan bangus.”

The mayor agreed that without a tag, it is difficult to visibly distinguish the real Dagupan bangus from milkfish produced elsewhere.

Bangus raised in Dagupan are distinct in taste given the brackish water in the city’s fishponds with clayish soil at the bottom and the feed is supplemented by tiny aquatic plants locally known as “lablab” which thrives best in Bonuan, Dagupan City.

The tail-tagging will be applied to bangus for both local and international market.

The mayor said this will be done to protect buyers of milkfish anywhere in the country, including importing countries like the United States.

At the Magsaysay fish market in Dagupan, the local produce bangus commands higher prices than the milkfish from Binmaley town and other various milkfish-producing areas in western Pangasinan.

Fernandez is also considering the issuance of franchises to retailers of milkfish in Metro Manila that will sell Dagupan bangus exclusively.–LVM
