DTI: Beware of text scams
SOME people are smarter than others, while more are simply gullible than others.
The latter are easy preys of text scammers so the Department of Trade and Industry again warned of more of text messages during this time when people are at their wits’ end looking for other means to earn more in order to cover expenses for their children’s enrollment.
Provincial Director Peter Mangabat said there are three simple ways to detect such frauds and avoid being victimized.
First: the source of the text message is just an ordinary 11-digit mobile number not the special four-digit numbers. Second: the message would claim that the recipient won in a raffle they never participated in.
Third: the message urges the target victim to claim his prize ’quickly’ and pay a certain amount. Mangabat said legitimate promos usually give the winner 60 days to claim the prize.
Mangabat said another rampant text scam today is to be asked to text “winning” number back to the sender which in truth, is a number for “pasa-load.”
DTI urged the public to report text scams at the DTI office to help stop these fraudulent activities. (PIA1-Pangasinan)
