LINGAYEN—The 434th founding anniversary celebration of Pangasinan on April 5 proved to be a day showcasing the province’s best.

The jam-packed day kicked off with a commemorative program and awarding of the 3rd Kurit Panlunggaring, a literary contest in Pangasinan language, graced by thousands of Pangasinenses led by Governor Amado Espino Jr. and the event’s guest of honor and speaker, Sister Mary John Manzan, OSB.

In her speech, Mananzan, 2013 ASNA Awardee for Women’s Studies and Feminist Activism, urged Pangasinanenses to strengthen their call for women empowerment.

“Be the salt of the earth,” she remarked.

Mananzan denounced the controversial cutting of some 1,829 trees along the national highway in eastern Pangasinan towns.

In the afternoon, floats by different towns and municipalities paraded along the major streets of the capital town, featuring their respective livelihood, lifestyle, culture and tradition.

Alongside the Parada na Dayew (grand float parade) were street-dancers who showcased the talent and creativity of Pangasinenses with their performances and indigenously-designed costumes.

Wrapping up the celebration in the evening, the ASNA Awards Night and Ball was held at the Sison Auditorium while a variety show dubbed Paliket ed Aplaya was staged at the Lingayen beachfront.
