LINGAYEN–The Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) acclaimed the province’s efforts in improving the development of carabaos.

Last March 27, the PCC awarded a plaque of recognition to the provincial government for passing Provincial Ordinance No. 170-2013, which regulates the sale or slaughter of female carabaos, both the riverine buffaloes and crossbreds.

The ordinance paved the way for the creation of the carabao build-up trust fund with P1-million as initial seed money and an annual allocation of P500,000.

Dr. Eric Perez of the Provincial Veterinary Office said the fund is being used for the buy-back scheme of breedable female carabaos offered for sale or slaughter by their owners or livestock traders.

According to the PCC, the approval and implementation of the ordinance “strongly demonstrated (Pangasinan’s) unequivocal support to the upgrading of carabaos and development of the carabao-based enterprises spearheaded by the provincial veterinary office (PVO) in cooperation with the PCC located at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University.”
Second District Board Member Raul Sison received the plaque at the PCC National Gene Pool and Headquarters, Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija.

During the awarding ceremony, representatives of different local government units expressed their intention to adopt the same ordinance.–Johanne R. Macob
