TOP TOURIST DESTINATION

LINGAYEN—Inviting beaches, boosted by an intensified promotional campaign and more eventful festivals, have proven to be a formula for success with Pangasinan now the top tourist destination in Region 1.

Department of Tourism Ilocos Region Director Martin Valera, in an interview after the formal opening of the Pista’y Dayat celebration here last April 11, said latest records show that the province had the most number of visitors in the past months and has been generating the highest interest based on hits in the government website visitmyphilippines.com.

“You have more visitors than the rest of the region. That’s based on verifiable documentation like occupancy rates of hotels (but) even with low occupancy reports, you’re getting the highest number of visitors,” Valera said.

Tourists are particularly interested in the western coast of Pangasinan where its fine beaches are located.

Valera also noted that accessibility is a key element for Pangasinan drawing in tourists.

“You’re well connected, you’re near the main markets, in Region 1, the National Capital Region,” he said.

Valera added that the festivals being held across the province contribute to the tourism sector as these create awareness, generate investments and other economic opportunities.

“So all in all, the community where it is being held is the winner. That’s the beauty of festivals,” Valera said.

Other popular come-ons in the province are its food, sight -seeing destinations, and shopping.

Next to Pangasinan, the province of Iocos Norte is the second top tourist destination given its accessibility by air transport.—Tita Roces
