DAGUPAN’s Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) Dukes pulled a pulsating victory by coming from behind to tie the game first (93-93) in regulation time, then fuelled a strong windup in the extra five minutes period to boot out the Cordillera region champion University of Baguio Cardinals, 105-100, in the semis of the 8th Panagbenga Invitational Basketball Tournament held March 31 in Baguio City.

The win gave LNU the last slot in the championship, facing La Finns Scholastica of La Union on April 11 via a knockout match.

After trailing by 12 points in the first half, 33-45, then 64-69 at the third quarter and 91-93 with 12 seconds remaining and already on the verge of defeat, Dukes point-guard Alipio recovered a loose ball after a miss by the Cardinals and scored an easy lay-up to tie the game at 93-93. The extra period proved to benefit the Dukes.

“We’re running out of time and almost fell short. Eventually we came away as winners due to perseverance, teamwork and hard work,” said interim coach Julius Puzon.

Lloyd Quisay scored a team high 24 points, Rodcel Yanga with 18, Maynard Bona with 17, while Alipio and Julius Palaganas each had 15 marks.

Kendrick Basan had 24 points for the Cardinals while Darien Ocassion, Ranzae Cosme and Noel Cathedral contributed 19, 15 and 14 points, respectively.–JAGJr.
