A BALON Dagupan Swimming Club will be organized by the city government to serve as the official umbrella organizaiton of various swimming teams in the city.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) passed a resolution last week authorizing Mayor Belen Fernandez to organize the club to enable the city government to develop athletes to compete in national and international games.

“The swimming club will be an avenue for youngsters to be trained, be guided into becoming athletes who would bring pride to the city,” said Councilor Jeslito Seen, author of the resolution.

The club will be open to grade school students willing to undergo advance training.

Other benefits of members include free use of the Dagupan City pool site, financial support in competitions from the city government and opportunity to be part of the Philippine Swimming Incorporated (PSI) as the city plans to register the club with PSI.

The Fernandez administration’s support for sports development reaped its first rewards after the city’s team ranked fourth in a recent regional athletic competition, up from seventh the previous year.

The mayor has promised a bigger budget for the athletes in 2015.—Dada Austria
